Film Travelers - New year, new name!
In 2017 we opened our doors as Nerd Nation Travel specializing in film tourism destinations, retreats and strategy. As we have honed and re-developed our mission it seems only fitting that our name reflect the change. We are pleased to introduce you to Film Travelers!
Film Travelers mission is to boost tourism and economic development for cities, states and countries around the world through film. Film Travelers works with national and international tourist boards, chambers of commerces and state and federal government agencies to create marketing and promotional campaigns that leverage the power of film tourism.
Film tourism has been on the rise thanks to popular shows like Game of Thrones, Outlander, Downton Abbey, the Harry Potter movies. Today 1 in 5 tourists travel specifically to visit the location of a movie or TV show they love. Figures show that tourist spending on film and TV in Scotland alone in 2017 reached a record £95 million – and a £26 million increase on the previous year. Over the past decade, spend on filming has increased by more than 300 per cent.* Game of Thrones-inspired tourism continues to be one of the biggest travel trends – a pursuit so powerful that it’s overhauled the tourist economies of several countries. The “Game of Thrones effect” is cited as the main factor in Iceland’s jump from approximately 566,000 visitors in 2011 to over 1 million visitors in 2015. According to TripAdvisor, the show’s filming locations see an average 120 per cent increase in tourist interest. Croatia, which serves as the setting for King’s Landing among other locales, has seen its struggling economy boosted by a 10 per cent year-over-year increase in tourism since the show began filming there.**
Executive Director Sarah Mason is one of very few professionals considered to be an expert in Film Tourism. She has successfully put to work her unique combination of skills and experience in film, travel and marketing for visitors bureaus and government agencies in Massachusetts, Georgia, Louisiana, Scotland, England, Ireland and more. Through her leadership Film Travelers aims to use the power of storytelling to put every city, state, country and region on the map.
